Troubleshooting

My outdoor LED strip failed after one season — where did water get in?

Water enters at the ends and at every cut, never through the middle of a potted strip. The IP rating of the jacket is only half the story.

What we need to confirm it

  • Where is it installed? Direct rain, splash, or immersion? Any cut in the middle of the run?

Diagnosis

Cause, then fix

Open ends at the reel

IP67/IP68 jacket protects the face, but the bare tail ends at the power connection are the water entry.

Fix: Silicone end caps plus heat-shrink sealed over the connection — no exposed conductor.

Splice boxes outside the rating

A junction box rated IP65 with a cable gland that was not tightened is still a rain funnel.

Fix: Use potted connectors or a fully sealed IP68 junction.

Wrong IP rating for the location

IP65 = splash. Rain and submersion need IP67 sleeve or IP68 potted.

Fix: IP68 for permanent outdoor burial, ponds and irrigation zones; IP67 for exposed soffits.
