How to specify an LED strip for a project, in eight decisions

The full sequence we run with clients: location, mounting, optics, power, protection, control, packaging, tolerance. One decision per line — copy it into your RFQ.

1. Where is the line, and who sees it?

A 1 m viewing distance needs 320-480 LEDs/m or COB. A room-scale wash works with 120-160 SMD. The viewing distance decides density before the budget does.

2. Board width and channel

8 mm or 10 mm board for a standard 30 mm cove; 5 mm where the reveal is tighter than 20 mm. Aluminium channel doubles as the heat sink — the cheapest optical and thermal upgrade you can buy.

3. CCT and CRI

Warm 2700K for hospitality and bedrooms, neutral 4000K for kitchens and circulation, cool 5000K+ for industrial. Ra90 minimum where products are sold, Ra95+ for jewellery, art and cosmetics.

4. Power per metre and total run

10 W/m is the safe default for enclosed voids; 14-15 W/m only when there is a heat path. Total watts = metres x W/m; from that everything downstream is arithmetic.

5. Voltage and feed points

DC24V is the default: it halves the voltage-drop budget versus 12V and allows 5 m feed spans. Split long runs and feed from the middle.

6. IP rating per zone

IP20 dry interior; IP65 splash zones and damp rooms; IP67 sleeve or IP68 potted for rain, burial and immersion. The rating applies to the whole assembly, ends included.

7. Control and dimming

Fixed white for most projects. Dimming needs a driver that matches the protocol: trailing-edge/PWM, 0-10V, DALI or DMX. The dimmer and the driver are one decision, not two.

8. Packaging, tolerances and spares

Fix reel length, connector type and label format. Write acceptance tolerances (CCT range, CRI minimum, lm/m minimum) into the PO, and order 5% spares from the same batch.
