Metres, watts, drivers, and what to order

How to turn a drawing into an order line without an engineer in the room.

1. Metres = length of light line

Measure the centre line of the run, not the wall length. Every corner, drop and indoor-outdoor crossing adds length. Add 5% for cutting waste.

2. Watts = metres x W/m

A 60 m project at 10 W/m = 600 W load for the whole installation.

3. Drivers = load / 0.8

600 W of strip needs drivers rated at least 750 W. Buy 780-800 W, not 600 W.

4. Feed points keep the end lit

24V: one feed per 5-10 m at 10 W/m, depending on the lead length. 12V: half the distance.

5. Cost per metre, not cost per reel

Compare lm/m and W/m; a cheaper reel with 30% less output costs more over the life of the project.

6. Order formula

Total order = (drawing metres x 1.05 cutting waste) + 5% spares from the same batch.
