Troubleshooting

Is my LED strip too hot to touch?

Warm is normal. Burning is a sizing problem. Heat kills LEDs and solder joints, and it is the number one cause of early failure.

What we need to confirm it

  • W/m, enclosure sealed or open, mounting surface, ambient temperature?

Ask an engineer

Diagnosis

Cause, then fix

W/m too high for the environment

15-20 W/m in a sealed void with no heat path runs the board far above ambient.

Fix: 10 W/m or less in enclosed cavities, with aluminium channel as the heat sink.

Driver inside the same sealed enclosure

Driver efficiency heat plus strip heat in a closed box is the classic early-failure combo.

Fix: Move the driver out of the cavity or ventilate it.

Adhesive to a non-heat-conducting surface

Tape onto drywall or wood traps heat in the board.

Fix: Mount on aluminium channel so the PCB conducts heat to the profile.

Spec that avoids this
