Troubleshooting

How do I size the power supply for an LED strip?

Total watts divided by 0.8, plus headroom. Undersizing is the cheapest saving and the most expensive mistake on site.

What we need to confirm it

  • Total metres × W/m, controller draw, input voltage (110/230V), ambient for the driver?

Diagnosis

Cause, then fix

Summing watts and buying that size

Drivers run hot and their life drops near full load.

Fix: Load the driver to 70-80% of its rating — that is the 1.3x rule.

Forgetting the controller

DMX / SPI controllers and amplifiers draw power too.

Fix: Add controller and amplifier draw before sizing the driver.

Using AC rated power supplies for DC

Strip is DC; the power supply must be DC output with matching voltage (12V or 24V).

Fix: Match output voltage exactly — 24V strip on a 12V supply lights partially and fails.
