Troubleshooting

Cut an LED strip and only part of it lights up — what did I do wrong?

Two mistakes cause 90% of this: cutting on the wrong mark, and wiring a reel from both ends by mistake.

What we need to confirm it

Diagnosis

Cause, then fix

Cut on the wrong mark

Every reel has a scissor mark at a fixed pitch (e.g. every 25 mm on DC24V 8 LEDs/cut). Cut anywhere else and you sever a trace, so the cut segment drops out.

Fix: Always cut on the printed scissor mark, centred between two solder pads.

Cut point is at the very ends

The first and last LED of a reel are fed from the tail; cutting 10 mm in removes one supply path.

Fix: Keep the first and last 100 mm intact or re-connect the tail properly.

Polarity reversed on re-joining

Strips are DC. + to - reversed means nothing lights, or only a few LEDs before protection.

Fix: Match + to + and - to -. On 2-pin connectors there is no polarity protection; get it right the first time.

Virtual junction wired wrong

Mid-run connections need both power in and the cut jump (2 pins) plus the through-link (2 pins). Missing the jump breaks the far half.

Fix: On a cut mid-reel: jump the two pads, then feed power to the same point. Do not rely on the connector to carry power across.
